Mass Maritime Holds Off Salem State in Five

SALEM, Mass. -- Mass Maritime defeated Salem State (30-28, 25-13, 21-25, 19-25, 15-7) in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) volleyball action on Tuesday night at Clean Harbors Center. The Buccaneers improve to 4-15 and 2-2 in conference. The Vikings are now 2-17 and 0-4. 

How it Happened

  • Mass Maritime escaped with a 30-28 set one win, rallying from a 20-17 deficit to tie the game at 22-all. Leading 25-24, the Buccaneers had a chance to end the set, but Salem State survived on an unforced error by Mass Maritime. Both teams were a point from victory before an error and a service ace by Madeleine Salinas finally gave Mass Maritime the 30-28 win. 
  • Leading, 8-5 in set two, the Buccaneers ripped off six straight points to take a commanding 14-5 lead. Back-to-back service aces by Marlo Stark gave the Buccaneers an insurmountable 19-8 lead. Alaina Strozik's third kill of the set extended the advantage to 23-11 as Mass Maritime took set two, 25-13.   
  • Two kills from Alanys Torres gave Mass Maritime a 5-0 lead. Salem State battled back as three kills by Sabina Kamanda helped tie the set at 13-13. The Vikings responded with an 8-3 run behind the offense of Presley Shairs - 3 kills and another kill from Kamanda that gave the Vikings a 21-16 advantage before Salem State won 25-21.
  • Two service aces by Shayla Narodowg helped Salem State take an early 6-3 lead before five straight points by Mass Maritime put the home team ahead, 8-6. Kamanda once again spearheaded a Vikings' comeback as her two finishes gave the Vikings a 15-13 lead. An ace by Kamanda put Salem State in front 20-16 as the Vikings won 25-19.
  • Torres gave Mass Maritme a 6-3 lead with consecutive kills in set five. A kill by Shairs cut the deficit to 8-6 in favor of the Buccaneers, but Mass Maritime pulled away, scoring five of the next six points before winning the final set, 15-7. 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Torres led Mass Maritime with 10 kills and nine digs.  
  • Audrey Manning had 38 digs to go with nine assists while Narodowg had 26 assists and 18 digs. 
  • Shairs - 16 kills and Kamanda - 12 kills highlighted Salem State's offense.
  • Ariana Barrows - seven kills also added 22 digs along with Kailey Roche, who also had 22 digs. 
  • Eva Haralabatos chipped in with 22 assist sand 13 digs.

The Vikings return home to face MCLA this Saturday at Twohig Gymnasium. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
