SPORTS MEDICINE MISSION STATEMENT

The Salem State University Sports Medicine Department will provide the highest quality health care, safety, and support to student-athletes. This includes traditional athletic training services, which encompass the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. In addition, the Sports Medicine Department offers a broad field of medical practice related to physical and mental health.

The Certified Athletic Trainers work under the supervision and direction of the Team Physician and in affiliation with other off-site health care facilities to provide the highest quality medical care to student-athletes. The team physician is Dr. David St. Pierre. Additional staff include Dr. Doug Peterson, Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Rafael Kakazou, Orthopedic Surgeon, and our concussion specialist Dr. Miguel Concepcion, Primary Care and Sports Medicine. We are an affiliate member of the Boston's Children's Hospital.

The Sports Medicine Department stands out because of its affiliates, both on-campus and off. The department works closely with Salem State University’s Counseling and Health Services, having liaisons for general medicine, mental health, and crisis intervention. On campus services also include nutrition, as well as strength and conditioning. The Sports Medicine Department offers expert services off campus, consisting of chiropractors, dentists, and mental health consultants.

In addition to the services provided to the Athletics Department, the Sports Medicine Staff work with the CAATE Athletic Training Program (ATP) to provide clinical education experiences for the ATP students. The athletic training student is assured a high quality and valuable learning experience while at the same time assisting the Certified Athletic Trainers in providing quality health care to student-athletes.
