ATHLETICS PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION STATEMENT

University Mission Statement

Salem State's mission is to provide a high quality, student-centered education that prepares a diverse community of learners to contribute responsibly and creatively to a global society, and serve as a resource to advance the region's cultural, social and economic development.

As a foundation of this mission, the university strives to engage students in an inspiring transformational educational experience. The University mission statement can be found in its entirety at https://www.salemstate.edu/about/mission.php

The Department of Athletics contributes to this mission through offering a total educational experience with quality opportunities that inspire, educate, motivate, and empower individuals to be positive contributors to Salem State University and the greater global community. The Department also serves the needs of surrounding communities through working with internal and external constituencies to maximize program opportunities in our multifaceted facilities.

Department of Athletics and Recreation Mission Statement

The Department of Athletics and Recreation serves the academic, intercollegiate, and student-athlete development needs of the Salem State University community by providing a variety of educational, social, and athletic programs. Intercollegiate athletics strives to contribute and enhance the overall quality of the education experience by providing opportunities for the development of character, academic achievement, citizenship, leadership, social and economic values, fair play and athletic skills.

NCAA Division III – Discover ~ Develop ~ Dedicate

As a member of NCAA Division III, the athletic program at Salem State University adheres and subscribes to the philosophy of placing primary emphasis on the individual participant and amateur competition. Additionally, it is our belief that participants in intercollegiate athletics should receive the same treatment as other students, should be given no unique privileges, and should not be denied the rights and opportunities available to non-athletes. We are committed to providing a safe environment for competition, and expect a high level of sportsmanship and ethical conduct from our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans.

Salem State University has a rich tradition of excellence in intercollegiate athletics. We believe that student-athletes’ pursuit of excellence must include academic success and personal development, and is committed to providing services that are necessary for that success. The department strives to offer programming that provides education in areas such as health & wellness, time management, professional growth, leadership and social responsibility. We strongly believe that well-rounded student-athletes are at the core of our long term success. The department is also committed to offering community service and civic engagement opportunities and has been nationally recognized for these efforts.
