Worcester State Defeats Salem State 3-1

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State and Worcester State opened up Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play on Tuesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. The Lancers bested the Vikings in four sets (25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-15) to improve to 5-11 on the season and 1-0 in the MASCAC. The Vikings are now 2-12 and 0-1 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED

A 5-1 spurt gave Worcester State a 17-10 lead following a Salem State service error. The Vikings rallied behind Presley Shairs, who pulled the Vikings to within a point after her second kill of the set. An attack error by the Lancers tied the game at 20-all and Salem State went ahead 23-20 after a kill by Haley Phillips. However, the Vikings could not close the deal as Worcester State scored five straight points, which included a pair of aces by Alexia Mitchell to win 25-23.

Shairs led the way in set two, producing 10 kills to lead Salem State to a set two win. The Vikings trailed early, but a tightly contested set ensued with neither team gaining a lead larger than three points after the game was tied 9-9. Back-to-back attack errors gave the Lancers an 18-16 lead, but Salem State stayed close and went ahead, 22-21 on a kill by Shairs. The Lancers tied the game before kills by Shairs and Kailey Roche cemented the win for Salem State, 26-24.

Set three saw five lead changes before the Lancers pulled out a three-point win. A Shairs kill gave Salem state a two-point edge, 10-8, but once again the two teams battled back-and-forth before an error by the Vikings gave Worcester State some breathing room at 22-18. Cassidy D'Esposito's third kill gave Worcester State a 25-22 win.

The Lancers prevailed in set four, using a 6-1 run to open the game to spur them to victory. Salem State came back and trailed by just four points, 18-14 after an attack error by Worcetser State. The Lancers, however, pulled away with a 7-1 run to close out the set.

D'Esposito had 14 kills for Worcester State while the Lancers finished with 10 aces, including four each by Alexia Mitchell and Angela Colonis. Colonis also had 17 assists and 11 digs while Katherine Crateau led the way on defense with 17 digs.

Shairs led all players with 18 kills while Celia Carbone chipped in with 22 assists. Kailey Roche provided a match-best 27 digs for Salem State.

The two teams combined for 21 ties and 11 lead changes.
