Bonnie May Invitational Results

Northampton, Mass. -- Salem State took on Gallaudet University and Bates College on Saturday in the 3rd Annual Bonnie May Invitational hosted by Smith. The Vikings lost to Gallaudet in four sets, 25-12, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-12 in the opener. Salem State squared off against Bates in their second match of the day. The Bobcats swept the Vikings, 25-16, 25-11 and 25-17. Salem State is now 2-6 on the season.   

HOW IT HAPPENED (GALLAUDET)  

  • The Bison hit .714% in the first set, registering 15 kills in 21 attempts. Gallaudet took an 8-5 lead following a kill by Jada Zarembka. Leading 14-10, a 6-2 run featuring two kills by Brielle Worley, made the score 20-12 in favor of Gallaudet. Wormley finished with six kills in the set as the Bison won 25-12.

  • Six aces helped propel Galluadet in set two, erasing an early Salem State lead. Tied 4-4, the Bison scored six straight points. Cassidy Perry's fourth kill of the set made the score 14-9 before Worley added three more kills to give Gallaudet a 25-11 victory.

  • Salem State battled the Bison in a tightly contested third set as the two teams were tied 19 times in the set. Bella Coccia led the attack with for kills for the Vikings before a service ace by Eva Haralabatos and a bad set gave Salem State a 25-23 win.

  • The Bison opened set four on a 6-0 run after four straight aces by Ella Gamble. Back-to-back attack errors by Salem State made the score 9-1. Gallaudet's eighth ace of the set pushed the lead to 14-3. Citrine Lummer and Worley, who combined for seven kills, helped the Bison clinch the set, 25-12.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Worley and Lummer combined for 26 kills and 23 digs for Gallaudet. Gamble had a match-high nine aces and 38 assists.  

  • Coccia led Salem State with six kills. Gracie Dailey finished with six digs and four kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED (BATES)  

  • Tied 4-4, a 7-2 run punctuated by back-to-back kills by Ami Evans put Bates on top 11-6. Two aces by Ellie Asada highlighted a 5-0 spurt by the Bobcats, who led 22-12. Julia Neumann's second kill of the set gave Bates a 25-16 victory.
  • Bates broke open a close second set, going on an 8-3 run. Evans registered four kills as the Bobcats extended their lead to 22-12 before a kill by Katie Kortekaas ended the set, 25-11 in favor of Bates. 

  • Ana Reneaum-Lavoie's third straight kill for Bates put the Bobcats in front 8-3. The Vikings, who hit just .147 in the final set, pulled to within 21-15, before the Bobcats exited the set with a match-clinching, 25-17 win.  

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Kortekaas ended with eight kills for Bates, while Sami Kim tallied 12 digs to lead the Bobcats.

  • Carbone topped Salem State with seven assists and added five digs.
