Vikings Split With Vermont-Johnson

JOHNSON, Vermont –- Salem State split a pair of matches against Vermont-Johnson on Saturday at Carter Gymnasium. The Vikings lost the opener in five sets, losing the final set by a score of 18-16. The Vikings came back to sweep the Badgers, 3-0 in the second match of the day. Salem State evens their record at 4-4 while Vermont-Johnson goes to 4-8.

Game 1

In the first match, Salem State opened with a 25-23 win. Set two went to the wire with Vermont-Johnson winning 25-22. The Vikings rolled to a comfortable win in set three as Presley Shairs and Abigail O'Connor combined for five kills. Both teams struggled in set four, hitting just .037 as the Badgers forced a fifth set, winning 25-22 after jumping out to a 14-3 lead. Set five saw five ties and eight lead changes as Salem State came back from a 10-4 deficit. A kill by Shairs gave Salem State a slim one-point lead, but Vermont-Johnson scored six of the next nine points as a kill by Vivie Babbotta and a bad set gave the win to the Badgers.

Haley Philips had seven kills, five digs and three blocks for Salem State. Presley Shairs chipped in with seven kills, six digs and two blocks. Kailey Roche contributed 18 digs, five assists and five aces. Celia Carbone finished with a match-high 24 assists with 16 digs.

Vivienne Babbott led Vermont Johnson with 13 kills while Max Ludlow had 11 kills, 12 assists and 13 digs. Jimmi Lynn Canchola-Williams led all players with 23 digs.

Game 2

The Vikings racked up nine kills to win 25-13 in the opening set. Four consecutive attack errors gave Salem State a 19-6 as the Vikings went on to win by 12 points. A 10-0 run by Salem State gave the Vikings a 16-6 lead in set two, highlighted by three service aces from Kenzie Currey. The Badgers drew to within 16-11, but Vermont-Johnson, which hit .000 for set committed multiple errors, allowing Salem State to pull away for a 25-18 win. The Vikings cruised to a three-set sweep, jumping out to a 12-6 lead after an attack error by Ludlow. Three errors by the Badgers pushed the lead to 21-10 before the Vikings cemented the win on an ace by Currey.

Shairs led the way with six kills while O'Connor had five. Ariana Barrows topped the Vikings with 11 digs and Carbone racked up 20 assists and five digs. Babbott led the way for Vermont-Johnson with seven kills. Ludlow had 12 assists and six digs.
