Vikings Fall to Bears in Conference Matchup

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – This afternoon, Salem State volleyball traveled to Bridgewater, Massachusetts to take on conference opponent, Bridgewater State University. The Bears took the victory over the Vikings in three sets (25-9, 25-13, 25-19), leveling the Vikings conference record at 1-1.

Bridgewater freshman Sarah Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) secured eight points off seven kills to help her squad take the first set 25-9.

The Vikings jumped out to a 4-2 lead to start the second set before the Bears scored eight unanswered points giving them the 12-4 advantage. Despite stringing together a few points, the Bears were able to keep the Vikings at bay to take the second set 25-13.

Bridgewater State started the third set in similar fashion, jumping out to a 12-3 lead, before Vikings' freshman Presley Shairs (Salem, Mass.) scored three consecutive points to cut the lead in half. Both teams would go back and forth with the score remaining in favor of the Bears before the Vikings went on a run of their own, notching six unanswered points to bring the score to 18-14. Unfortunately, this would be as close as the Vikings would get as the Bears went on to take the set 25-19 and with it the 3-0 victory.

The Vikings were led by Shairs who had three kills and three aces, Eva Haralabatos (Melrose, Mass.) who had eight assists, eight digs, and two kills, and Abigail O'Connor (Gilford, N.H) who had four kills.

Becca Whalen (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kim Gowell (Durham, N.H.) led the Bears with 11 and eight kills, respectively. Additionally, teammate Savannah Quintal (Assonet, Mass.) had 16 assists to go along with five digs.
