SALEM, Mass. – Elms College earned two wins on Saturday in a tri-meet match hosted by Salem State at Twohig Gymnasium. The Blazers defeated the Vikings 25-13, 25-23 and 25-17 before beating Northern Vermont-Johnson, 25-16, 25-10 and 25-11. The Blazers are now 4-3 on the season. Northern Vermont-Johnson defeated Salem State, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-15 in the third match to go to 1-1 on the season. The Vikings slide to 0-5.

The Blazers raced out to a 15-7 lead in set one receiving three kills from Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.). Salem State managed just five kills in the first set on 34 attempts as an attack error by the Vikings gave Elms a 12-point victory.

Salem State tightened up their play in the second set, carrying a 18-17 lead following a Blazers' error. A service error by Elms Gave the Vikings a 23-21 lead, but the Blazers rallied for four straight points, featuring back-to-back kills by Cruz Diaz and Govanna Rosado (Humacao, P.R.).

The Blazers hit .385 in the third set to earn an eight-point win to secure the victory. A kill by Hana Hogan (Lancaster, Calif.) drew Salem State to within 15-14, but Elms went on a 10-3 run to close out the win. Cruz Diaz, who finished with 16 kills and 12 digs, had three kills during the run.

Laura Jensen (Torrance, Calif.) finished with 11 kills and nine digs while Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Boca Raton, Fla.) had nine kills, four aces and 13 digs. Sabrina Christie (Agawam, Mass.)  contributed seven kills and a match-high 16 digs. Rosado paced the Blazers with 39 assists.

Michelle Le (Woburn, Mass.) had 15 digs while Miranda Quinlan (Billerica, Mass.) topped Salem State with seven kills. Eva Haralabatos (Melrose, Mass.) ended the match with 16 assists.

ELMS 3 NORTHERN VERMONT-JOHNSON 0

Cruz Diaz had six kills in the first set to lead Elms to a 25-16 win in set one. The Blazers broke open a close set, scoring five straight points following a kill by Jensen. Three straight errors, including a service error set up a clinching kill by Christie.

Elms cruised to an easy 25-10 in set two. Leading 11-4 the Blazers took advantage of multiple Badger miscues to build a 21-9 lead. A service error and three straight attack errors by Northern Vermont-Johnson gave the Blazers a 15-point win. Elms hit .444 during the set, which included three straight service aces by Ramos Figueroa.

Elms committed just one error in the final set to complete the sweep. The Badgers never threatened, trailing 18-9 after a service error. Kills by Ramos Figueroa, Jensen and Rosado ended with Elms winning 25-11.

Ramos Figueroa had six aces in the match and 12 digs for Elms. Cruz Diaz finished with 13 kills and five digs. Rosado tallied 22 assists while Christie added nine digs.

Chavez (Fullerton, Calif.) and Christina Betham (Aiea, Hawaii) led the Badgers with six kills each. Kylie Berry (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a team-high 10 assists. Chavez and Jimmi Lynn Williams (Florence, Colo.) topped Northern Vermont-Johnson with nine digs.

NORTHERN VERMONT-JOHNSON 3 SALEM STATE 1

Abigail O'Connor (Gilford, N.H.) tallied three kills to lead Salem State to a 25-19 set one win over Northern Vermont-Johnson. The Vikings built a 17-12 lead following O'Connor's third kill of the set. Haralabatos secured the win with a service ace as the Vikings hit .348 for the set. 

The Badgers built a commanding 17-7 lead in the second set behind the strong play of Betham, who had five kills in the set, including three in a row. Salem State rallied late, cutting the deficit to 24-20 after a kill by O'Connor, but Chavez ended the set for Northern Vermont-Johnson with her fifth kill of the afternoon. Salem State committed eight errors in the set.

Poor hitting once plagued the Vikings in the third set. Tied 11-11, Kills by Berry, Chavez and an ace by Betham gave the Badgers some breathing room with a 14-11 lead. Another kill by Betham and back-to-back attack errors by Salem State put Northern Vermont-Johnson on top 24-15 before a bed set by the Vikings gave the Badgers a 25-16 win. Northern Vermont-Johnson made just two errors in the set.

Salem State raced out to a 6-1 lead after kills by Quinlan and O'Connor. The Badgers fought back and took the lead 13-12 after an attack error by Salem State. A 6-1 run positioned Northern Vermont-Johnson for the win as three services aces by Mason Lores (Englewood, Colo.) spurred the rally. Salem State struggled once again on the receiving end as a bad set and kill by Chavez ended the set and match.

Betham had a match-high 18 kills and Chavez finished with 13 kills and 10 digs. Jimmi Lynn Williams (Florence, Colo.) had 15 digs while Lores had 33 assists and five aces.

O'Connor had nine kills for Salem State while Le added 18 digs. Sheehan finished with five kills and 10 digs. Haralabatos tallied 23 assist, three aces and six digs.
