THE LEAD— The Salem State women's soccer team fell to Worcester State, 2-1, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action Saturday afternoon. Prior to the match, the Vikings honored their five seniors on senior day. Salem State and the women's soccer team would like to thank McKenna Gilligan (Salem, Mass.)Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.)Hudah Ngoy Nkulu (Sheffield, Mass.)Kylie Phillips (Saugus, Mass.), and Madison Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) for their dedication to the Salem State women's soccer program throughout their careers!

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first half (11:58), Worcester struck first when Ella Tatarczuk rifled a shot slightly in front of the box on net that bounced off the top crossbar and rolled into the net. Later in the frame (24:38), the Lancers tacked on a second goal when Jessica Forbes headed in a loose ball in front of the net after it bounced off the crossbar on a free kick.
  • After the score, Salem continued to apply pressure on the offensive end, and the squad had maybe its best look at 36:28 when Mitza sent a hard free kick on net that caught an unlucky bounce off the crossbar that the Lancers ended up clearing out of their zone. For the remainder of the half, Worcester's defense held firm, and the visitors took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, the Vikes trimmed the deficit to one at 54:10. Anna Frost (Ada, Mich.) sent a free kick on net that found the head of Lindsay McGotty (Morristown, N.J.) , who headed in her shot past an out-of-place Ella Gumienny.
  • As the second went on, Salem had multiple looks to tie the match as the Blue and Orange peppered Gumienny with three shots on net that were unfortunately all turned away as the visitors held on for the 2-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • McGotty's score was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Frost's assist marked the first of the season and her career.
  • Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) finished the contest with a season-high 13 saves.
  • Gummienny ended the day with nine stops for the Lancers.
  • Worcester State held the advantage in shots, 21-13.
  • However, the Vikings finished with more corner kicks, 5-3.
