Celebrating Black History Month: Hudah Ngoy Nkulu

In honor of Black History Month, Salem State Atheletics strives to celebrate the achievements of Black student-athletes who continue to inspire with their passion, resilience, and commitment to excellence. One such remarkable individual is Hudah Ngoy Nkulu (Sheffield, Mass.), a junior on the women's soccer team, whose story is not just about soccer but about embracing heritage, self-discovery, and honoring her roots.
Hudah's journey with soccer began at a very young age. "I pretty much taught myself how to play soccer by just kicking the ball against the wall," she shared. Her early self-guided practice laid the foundation for her love of the sport. Yet, it was her father, a former soccer player, who first introduced her to the game and played a role in shaping her connection to it. "My dad is my inspiration," Hudah said. "Not only did he introduce this sport to me, but he is the reason why I love playing this sport." Though her father passed away in 2016, his legacy lives on through Hudah's dedication and love for soccer.
When asked what Black History Month means to her, Hudah reflects on her unique perspective as a newly minted U.S. citizen. "I just became a U.S. citizen in August, so I don't know much about Black history," she said. "To me, it is just history." Coming from Uganda, Hudah's view on history is shaped by the complex narratives often written by colonialists. "If you were to google the history of Uganda, where I am from, you would find yourself reading information written by colonialists," she explained. "It is time for us to write our story. I hope that is what Black history is in the United States."
Hudah's passion for soccer has been a driving force in her life, and her commitment to the sport continues to shape her experiences as an adult. "I am grateful to be playing soccer as an adult," she said. "The time demands are a challenge, but I love soccer so much that I gave up income opportunities so I can attend training." Her ability to balance these demands speaks to her dedication and her deep love for the game that has been a part of her life since childhood.
Reflecting on her journey, Hudah also shares the wisdom she would offer her younger self. "Stop worrying and forgive yourself for not understanding what is going on around you," she advises. "Your work ethic and determination are enough." Her message is a testament to the strength she embodies both on and off the field.
As we celebrate Black History Month, Hudah Ngoy Nkulu's story reminds us of the importance of embracing one's heritage, carving out our own narratives, and honoring the legacy of those who came before us. Through her journey in soccer and her perspective on history, Hudah is not only making a mark her at Salem State but also paving the way for future generations to share their stories in their own voices.
