SALEM, Mass. – This afternoon at Alumni Field, Salem State's women's soccer team faced off against the Owls from Westfield State University. The Owls secured a 3-0 victory thanks to two second half goals. With the loss, Salem State concludes the regular season with an overall record of 4-10-3 and a conference record of 2-3-2.
How it Happened:
- The Owls took an early lead just five minutes into the game after Tia Tollis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) got her head on a Kiana Muratsuka (Mililani, Hawaii) corner to make it a 1-0 game in Westfield's favor.
- The Owls attempted to double their lead throughout the opening stanza, but Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) denied their attempts, including a big save in the 31st minute, to keep the Owls advantage at one to head into the break.
- The teams exchanged shots until the Owls extended their lead in the 64th minute. Just three minutes later, Muratsuka struck the ball into the top left corner, securing a 3-0 advantage for her team.
- In the 79th minute, the Vikings had a promising opportunity when McKenna Gilligan (Salem, Mass.) took a free kick aimed at the net. However, her shot sailed just over the crossbar, maintaining the Owls' three-goal lead, which would hold over the final ten minutes to solidify their 3-0 shutout over the Vikings.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Vikings held the MASCAC's leading goal scorer Delaney Parker (Orange, Mass.), who has 20 goals on the season, scoreless in the effort.
- Ava Guyer turned away seven shots in net.
