SALEM, Mass. – Salem State women's soccer hit the road this evening to take on the Falcons of Fitchburg State University for their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup of the season. A penalty kick in the 41st minute would be the decider that gave the Falcons the 1-0 victory over the Vikings.
How it Happened:
- After 40 scoreless minutes, the Falcons caught a break with a penalty kick, and Joanie Butler (Woburn, Mass.) took advantage, scoring on a low corner strike to put her team up 1-0 at halftime.
- The Vikings intensified their offensive pressure in the second half, nearly equalizing the game in the 88th minute when Krysta Zamejtis' (Danvers, Mass.) aggressive play led to a penalty kick. However, Savannah Scrodin's (Bristol, Vt.) shot and follow up were both saved by the Falcons' keeper, securing Fitchburg's 1-0 victory over Salem.
Inside the Numbers:
- Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) turned away five shots in the effort
- The Falcons' single goal tonight is the fewest they've scored against the Vikings since the 2018 season.
Up Next:
The Vikings are back at home this Wednesday, September 25 when they welcome Northshore foe, Gordon College, for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
