Salem State Defeated 1-0 By Rhode Island College in Season Opener

SALEM, Mass. -- Delaney LaRose netted the only goal of the game early in the first period as the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen clipped the Vikings 1-0 in the season-opener for both squads on Friday evening at Alumni Field. Before the game Salem State honored Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Wellness Scott Braid, who is leaving the University after 15 years for a position at Merrimack.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • LaRose scored at the 4:52 mark of the opening period, beating keeper Ava Guyer with a shot just below the crossbar.

  • The Anchorwomen held a decisive 11-1 advantage in shots in the 1st half.  

  • Karol Matamoros nearly extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the second half, but her shot banged off the crossbar following a corner kick.

  • The two teams combined for just seven shots in the second half.  

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Chloe Angelone picked up the win in net, stopping four shots for the shutout. 

  • Ava Guyer made 10 saves in her Viking debut, allowing just the one goal.

  • Jenna Mitza and Savannah Scrodin led Salem State with two shots on goal apiece.

  • This was the first meeting between the two teams since 2008, a 3-2 Viking's win.

Salem State has a quick turnaround as they will travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 1:00 PM game tomorrow afternoon.
