Mitza Spearheads Vikings to First Conference Win

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Salem State women's soccer traveled to Framingham, Massachusetts this afternoon for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup. In the eighty-first minute of the game, the Vikings sealed the victory when Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) landed the game-winning goal to lift Salem to the 2-0 victory over Framingham, and secure their first MASCAC victory of the season.

After a quiet start the match, Salem's offense picked up their intensity to land the first goal of game after Mitza found teammate, Savannah Scrodin (Mount Abraham, Vt.), to give the Vikings the 1-0 edge fifteen minutes into the game.  Less than a minute later it looked as if Salem would double their lead but Jetta Oskirko (Lancaster, Mass.) swatted Mitza's attempt, keeping the game at 1-0. Salem would attempt one more shot over the next thirty minutes, which once again would be saved by Oskirko, to send the game to the half with the Vikings ahead, 1-0.

Coming out of the break the Rams looked to even the score, but Lily Pfefferle thwarted their early attempts when she turned away three of their shots on goal. The Rams finally got the break they were looking for in the sixtieth minute after a foul in the box by Salem State set Hailey Baker (Peabody, Mass.) up for the penalty kick, which she converted to tie the game at one. With under ten minutes to play and the game still in a stalemate, Mitza converted a corner kick from Sydney Durkin (Dracut, Mass.) to notch the games' game-winning goal, as the horn would sound eight minutes later to solidify the Vikings' 2-1 victory over the Rams.
