Gordon Scores Two Second Half Goals to Defeat Salem State 2-1

SALEM, Mass. – Ava Forbes-Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored with just over five minutes remaining to propel Gordon to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Salem State at Alumni Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots scored two second half goals to improve to 4-2-2 on the season. The Vikings go to 2-6.

Scoring chances wire limited in the opening half with the two teams combining for just seven shots on net. Gordon's Sophie Richardson (Barrington, R.I.) had the best chance of either team, getting an open-look midway through the period, but she pushed her shot just to the right of the net.

A corner by the Vikings setup their score as Jasmin Moran (Falmouth, Mass.) kept control of a loose ball and lifted it just inside the crossbar for the game's first goal in the 36th minute.

The Fighting Scots tied the game in the  47th minute when Sarah Sierzenga (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) looped a shot from 18 yards out that tucked just underneath the crossbar.

Gordon's offense had Salem State on their heels in the final 10 minutes as the Fighting Scots forced the action into the Vikings' zone. Gordon outshot Salem State 10-3 after halftime while holding a 5-0 margin in corners.

The Fighting Scots' Jesse Skov (Westport, Mass.) got behind the Viking's defense, but she was stoned by Salem State goalie Lily Pfefferle (St. Paul, Minn.). However, Pfefferle was unable to corral the rebound, which landed at the foot of Forbes-Smith, who blasted in the game-winner in the 84th minute.

Emily Bengtson (Anthem, Ariz.) made seven saves in the victory for Gordon. Pfefferle stopped 10 shots in goal for the Vikings.
