Last Second Goal Lifts Corsairs Over Vikings

SALEM, Mass. - Salem State women's soccer traveled to Dartmouth this afternoon to play The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMAss Dartmouth) in non-conference play. Despite a great defensive effort by the Vikings, the Corsairs were able to convert a last second free kick to steal the 1-0 victory.

Salem State's senior goalie, Lily Pfefferle (St. Paul, Minn.), was a force in net saving eight of the Corsair's 21 shots.

UMass Dartmouth freshman, Veronica Bock (Walpole, Mass.), scored the sole goal of the game with 00:01 seconds on the clock.

The first half proved to be a defensive stalemate for both squads with the Vikings and Corsairs only firing off two and six shots, respectively. Vikings keeper, Lily Pfefferle, turned away three shots, while her counterpart, Katherine Hubbard (Haverhill, Mass.), saved one of her own, holding each team scoreless going into halftime.

The Corsairs increased their pressure on the Vikings attempting 14 shots in the second half, but the Vikings defense elevated as well to hold UMass scoreless going into the final seconds of the game. In a last-ditch effort, with one second on the clock, Veronica Bock booted a free kick over the outstretched arms of Pfefferle to give her squad the 1-0 advantage as the buzzer sounded.

The Vikings continue their road stint when they travel to Plymouth, New Hampshire to take on the Panthers of Plymouth State University on Wednesday, September 7 with a 3:30 p.m. start.
