Vikings Fall In Season Opener

SALEM, Mass. - Salem State women's soccer opened their 2022 campaign on the road tonight as they traveled to Worcester to take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Despite being held scoreless in the second half, the Engineers took the 4-0 victory over the Vikings.

The Engineers were led by Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) who had two goals and Ashleigh Matsis (Milford, NH) who had one goal and one assist in the victory.

Defensively, Lily Pfefferle (St. Paul, MN) spearheaded the Vikings with six saves in net.

Hannah Wolfgang scored the first two goals of the game to give the Engineers the 2-0 advantage before her teammates were able to find the back of the net two more times in the last five minutes of the first stanza to give them the 4-0 cushion going into halftime.

Although Salem State's defense was able to hold off the high powered WPI offense in the second half, it was not enough as the Engineers went on to take the 4-0 victory over the Vikings.

The Vikings are back on the road this Saturday, September 3, as they travel to Dartmouth, Massachusetts to take on the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 4:00p.m.
