Vikings Shutout Buccaneers 2-0

SALEM, Mass. -- Allie Vaillancourt (Boxford, Mass.) and Jasmine Moran (Falmouth, Mass.) scored second half goals to lead Salem State to their first win of the season, 2-0 over Mass Maritime on Saturday afternoon. The duo helped the Vikings open MASCAC play with a win as Salem State now stands at 1-0 in conference and 1-5 overall. The Buccaneers go to 1-3-1 and 0-1-1 in the MASCAC.

Both offenses struggled to get on track in the first half, with Salem State holding a slim 8-7 advantage in shots with neither team attempting a corner. Salem State keeper Lily Pfefferle (St. Paul, Minn.) and Mass Maritime netminder Lindsy Durgin (Rochester, Mass.) kept both teams off the scoreboard with Pfefferle making eight first half saves and Durgin five.

Each team had a prime scoring chance in the opening minutes of the second half as Moran and Mass Maritime's Taylor Blanton (Auburn, Mass.) nearly converted for their teams, but it was Vaillancourt, who took a header from Moran, and converted the game's first goal in in the 63rd minute. The score sparked the Vikings' offense and just over six minutes later Vaillancourt repaid the favor, finding Moran, who iced the win with a shot from 10 yards out.

Ariel Damery (Plympton, Mass.) nearly scored for the Buccaneers late in the half, but her shot rolled just wide of the net as the Vikings held on for the shutout.

Pfefferle stopped 13 shots in the victory while Durgin finished with nine for the Buccaneers.
