Salem State Celebrates D3 Week: Ceara Kelly '19

Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and of student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community. During the week, every Division III school and conference office is encouraged to conduct a type of outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement.

Salem State continues its celebration of DIII Week with a featured spotlight on former women's soccer player Ceara Kelly '19. Kelly was a three-year starter and senior captain. The Holbrook, Mass. native transferred to SSU after beginning her career at Wentworth University. A 2018 All-MASCAC selection, she returned to play following surgery and did not miss a start her entire career as a Viking. A disciplined, widely respected defender, she led the team to 2018 United Soccer Coaches Silver Award for Ethics and Sportsmanship and was the team's defensive player of the year. Kelly was a Dean's list member, a three-time time All MASCAC Academic Team selection; three-time National Scholar Athlete Day Award winner. She was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society for Collegiate Student-Athletes and completed her degree in Criminal Justice with a nearly perfect 3.98 GPA.

Why SSU?
"I chose to be a Viking because of the small school atmosphere and small class sizes. Transferring from Wentworth was a difficult choice and a lot of thought went into choosing Salem State and continuing my soccer career. Once I toured the school I knew it was the right fit for me."

My best memories from SSU?
"Some is the best memories from Salem State are the friendships I have made for life. I still stay in contact with multiple team members and also live with some. Playing soccer created bonds that can never be broken and I will forever be grateful for that."

Can you describe your experience being a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member?
"Being a SAAC member was an amazing experience. It brought together student athletes from all the teams that you would not usually see or talk to due to schedule and class differences. It gave us a chance to express our concerns and wants for the program. Our teams relied on us to be their voice and speak up on issues."

What does it mean to be a Viking?
"To be a Viking means wearing your jersey proudly and with dignity. You are representing the school and your team. You hold yourself to a higher standard than most students. Sacrifices of the regular student lifestyle have to be made for your sport and your teammates, and we wouldn't have it any other way."

What was the key to your success juggling the demands of being a team captain, SAAC rep, academic demands?
"Juggling so many demands at once is a very difficult task and it is all about time management. I had to plan out my days and make time for practice, games, homework, being a good captain and teammate, but also giving myself time to hangout with friends and take alone time. Surrounding yourself with supportive family and friends is very important. I knew I could turn to my teammates and lean on them when needed during stressful situations. Being a part of Salem State and the women's soccer team was one of the best experiences of my life and I will never forget the lessons and experiences it gave me."

What are your post-graduation goals?
"Post graduation I was able to travel to London, Barcelona, and Rome before starting my full time job. I am currently a paraprofessional in a Therapeutic Learning Center for third and fourth grade."
