WPI Secures 2-0 Win Over Salem State

SALEM, MASS.  –  Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) and Sofia Orrico (Bethel, Conn.) scored second half goals to lead WPI to a 2-0 shutout win over Salem State in the Vikings' season opener on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Engineers (1-0) racked up 27 shots as goalie Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, Mass.) made just one stop to earn the victory.

Salem State (0-1) held on in the first half despite being outshot 16-0. Keeper Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, Mass.) made a key save on a breakaway to keep the game scoreless while Mikayla Porcaro (Amesbury, Mass.) knocked away an apparent score with a nice play along the goal line.

McCrea knocked in the first goal of the game in the 63rd minute, beating Sabino, who was alone in the box, for the 1-0 lead. Orrico pushed the advantage to 2-0 when she converted a header off a corner in the 78th minute.

The Engineers kept possession for the remainder of the game, limiting Salem State's offensive chances in securing the two-goal win.

Sabinio finished with 15 saves for Salem State, which did not attempt a corner for the game.
