Vikings Cruise Past Anchormen, 13-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Salem State women's lacrosse notched their first win of the season this afternoon after defeating the Anchormen of Rhode Island College (RIC) by ten goals in their commanding 13-3 victory.  

Aislinn Bennett (Milford, Mass.) and Laura Young (Leominster, Mass.) spearheaded the Vikings as they both notched five points on the afternoon after Bennett's four goal, one assist performance and Young's two goal, three assist performance. Bennett also added four caused turnovers and seven ground balls in the victory.  Defensively, Nora Bradley (Haddon Township, N.J.) turned away 11 shots.

For the Anchormen, Nicolle Rosales (New Bedford, Mass.) had two goals while Hannah Marley (Tiverton, R.I.) notched one in the effort.

After just 30 seconds of play, the Anchormen took the lead after securing the initial draw control and taking it straight to the net for the first tally of the game. However, the Vikings quickly equalized the score when Bennett scored her first goal of the afternoon to tie the game at one after just one minute of play. In the closing minutes of the first RIC would score one more time to take the slight 2-1 edge before heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all Vikings as Megan Parthum (Marblehead, Mass.) netted two goals to lead Salem to a five-goal quarter, giving them the 6-2 tilt to head into the break.

Salem would build on their lead in the third quarter when three different Vikings scored in the opening five minutes to take the 9-2 advantage. In the final seven minutes of the third quarter, Bennett recorded two of her squad's three goals to send the game into the final 15 minutes with the commanding 11-2 lead.

Hannah Cochran (Marshfield, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season and team's 13th and final goal of the game at the 9:21 mark of the fourth quarter, solidifying the Vikings' 13-3 victory.

The Vikings are back at home this Tuesday, March 19th when they welcome the Nor'Easters from the University of New England. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m..
