Vikings Notch Second Win in a Row

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State women's lacrosse notched their second win in a row tonight as they defeated the Lasers of Lasell University, 15-9, to improve to 2-5 on the season. The Vikings are back on the road this Wednesday, March 29 as they travel to Gordon College to take on the Fighting Scots for a 4:30 start time.

Taylor Sujko (Revere, Mass.) spearheaded the Vikings with seven goals and three helpers in the victory while Madison White (Salem, Mass.) and Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.) added four and two goals, respectively.

For the Lasers, Teresa Kessner (Brentwood, N.Y.) recorded five goals while Emily Chapdelaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Kaitlin Bedell (Londonderry, N.H.)  netted two of their own in the effort.

How it Happened:

  • Sujko wasted no time finding the back of the net after a free position shot in the opening minute gave the Vikings the 1-0 tilt. Three minutes later Bedell would even the tally at one after notching her first goal of the season.
  • Sujko and Kessner each scored two more goals after the game was tied at two with less than seven minutes remaining in the first period, bringing the score to four going into the second.
  • Twenty seconds into the second period, Shmink snuck one past the Laser's keeper to give her team the one-goal nod (5-4). After regaining the lead, the Vikings did not look back as they would score three more unanswered goals to go into the half with the 8-4 advantage.
  • Shmink was able to build on her squad's lead coming out of the break, once again, as she was able to convert a pass from Jenna Wells (Revere, Mass.) to give Salem the 9-4 lead.
  • With under six minutes to play in the period the Lasers would score back-to-back goals to chip away at the Vikings' lead but a Sujko goal in the closing minute would keep Lasell at bay as the game entered the final period with Salem holding a four-goal edge (10-6).
  • The Vikings further distanced themselves in the final period, finding themselves ahead by as many as seven goals, before taking the eventual 15-9 victory over the Lasers.
