Salem State Dominates UMaine Farmington

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State earned their first victory of 2023 behind a five-goal performance from Taylor Sujko on Saturday at Alumni Field. The Vikings won in convicting fashion, 18-5 over UMaine Farmington. Salem State is now 1-5 on the year while the Beavers slide to 0-4.

Mackenzie Schmink had four goals and an assist while Madison White has three goals and three assists for Salem State.

Sujko had three first half goals and White added a pair as Salem State opened up a 9-4 halftime lead. Two scores from White to begin the game and another from Hannah Cochran gave the Vikings an early 3-0 lead. Ruby McMinis answered for UMaine Farmington, but Mackenzie Schmink and Aislinn Bennett connected for back-to-back-scores allowing the Vikings to exit with a 5-1 first quarter lead.

Sujko scored her first of the game at the 9:40 mark of the second, giving Salem State a five-goal lead. The Beavers, however rallied, cutting the deficit to 6-3 on a goal by Emma Bourget with 4:44 remaining. However, the Vikings scored three of the final four goals of the period, including two by Sujko to retain a five-goal margin at halftime.

The Vikings used a seven-goal outburst in the third quarter to build a 16-5 lead. Schmink scored two goals in the period while Aislinn Bennett and Jenna Wells each notched their second scores of the game.

Schmink and Sujko accounted for the only scores in the fourth quarter as Salem State rolled to an 18-5 win.

Carson Reidy earned her first win in net (1-5), making 13 saves. Kate Nowell stopped seven shots in the loss. White won 12 draw controls and caused four turnovers while Wells led the Vikings with five caused turnovers.
