Women's Lacrosse Finishes Road Stint with Loss

BOSTON, Mass. – Salem State women's lacrosse concluded their road stint last night when they traveled to Boston to take on Emmanuel College. The Vikings fell 8-0 to the Saints, but look to notch their first win of the season tomorrow as they welcome Occidental College for their first home game of the 2023 season.

Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.) spearheaded the Vikings with three goals on the night while Tayloe Sujko (Revere, Mass.), Megan Parthum (Marblehead, Mass.), and Angela Berry (Salem, Mass.) each chipped in one of their own in the effort.

The Saints saw three players notch hat tricks (Broghan Laundry, Rachel Canedy, and Avery Robillard) in their 18-goal victory.

How it Happened:

  • Less than three minutes into the game, Canedy completed a free position shot to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. The Vikings attempted to level the score in the following minute, but the Saints' keeper saved both attempts.
  • Emmanuel would add two more goals before Sujko scored the Vikings' first goal with 5:29 remaining in the first period. Carson Reidy (Burlington, Mass.) made three saves to end the first period and send the game into the second with the home team leading 3-1.
  • The Vikings came within one goal of the Saints after a Schmink goal brought the score to 3-2 with 13:32 to play in the half. After the Saints scored two goals in just as much time, Berry was able to find the back of the net before Schmink would record her second goal of the game, to keep their team within striking distance (5-4).
  • The Saints would close out the half with four unanswered goals to head into the break with the 9-4 advantage.
  • Emmanuel used the third period to further distance themselves from the Vikings as they notched six goals to go into the final 15 minutes with the comfortable 15-4 lead.
  • The Saints added two more goals to add to their tally before Parthum snuck one past Emmanuel's goalie to register her first goal of the season while bringing the score to 17-5 in favor of the home team.
  • Both teams would go on to record one more goal before the Saints took the 18-6 victory over the Vikings.
