Eagles Sneak Past Vikings, 15-13

BANGOR, Maine – Salem State women's lacrosse was back on the road this afternoon when they traveled to Bangor, Maine to take on the Eagles of Husson University. After 60 minutes of back-and-forth action the Eagles snuck away with the 15-13 victory over the Vikings.

Taylor Sujko (Revere, Mass.) and Jenna Wells (Cumberland, R.I.) paced the Vikings with six and three goals, respectively, while Madison White (Salem, Mass.), Catherine Lawrence (Guilford, Conn.) and Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.) each netted their first goals of the young season. In net, Carson Reidy (Burlington, Mass.) made 16 saves in the effort.

The Eagles saw three players notch hat tricks this afternoon with Averi Baker (Farmingdale, Maine) and Maddy Benoit (Hyde Park, Vt.) leading the way recording four goals apiece with Baker adding two helpers in the win.

How it Happened:

  • The Eagles scored the game's first goal two minutes into the action on a free position attempt, but it was quickly followed by a Sujko goal for the Vikings to tie the game at one apiece with 13:04 remaining in the first. Five minutes later, Sujko would notch her second goal of the game while giving Salem their first lead of the game.
  • From there, Benoit would go onto tie the game and then reclaim the lead for her squad after back-to-back goals put the Eagles ahead, 3-2, before a free position shot would double the home team's lead (4-2). A last-second push by the Vikings resulted in White's first goal of the season, sending the game into the second period with Salem trailing by one goal.
  • Husson would score the first goal of the second half before four unanswered Vikings goals, led by Sujko, who had two of her own, would give Salem the lead back, with a two-goal cushion (7-5).
  • The Eagles would use a timeout to regroup, which would work in their favor as they found themselves ahead 8-7 with under six minutes to play in the half. Four minutes later two Viking goals within ten seconds of one another would put the away team back on top, 9-8, before a last second Benoit goal would tie the game at nine going into the break.
  • The Eagles broke the stalemate five minutes into the half and were able to add one more before Sujko found the back of the net for the Vikings to bring the score to 11-10 with 6:41 to play in the period. Rediy would turn away two Eagles' shots before they were able to connect on back-to-back shots to head into the final fifteen minutes with the 13-10 advantage.
  • Facing a four-goal deficit, Wells sparked her squad to a comeback as she snuck one past the Eagles' keeper to make it a three-goal game before Lawrence and Schmink each netted goals of their own to bring the game to 14-13 in favor of the home team with under three minutes to play.
  • The Eagles used a timeout to regroup, which worked in their favor as they were able to halt the Vikings' comeback while adding another goal of their own to take the 15-13 victory over Salem.
