Sujko's Seven Goals Leads Salem State Past Mass Maritime

SALEM, Mass. -- Taylor Sujko (Revere, Mass.) scored a career-high seven goals and added an assist as Salem State defeated Mass Maritime 15-11 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings win their second straight conference game improve to 2-3 in the MASCAC and go to 6-7 overall. The Buccaneers dip to 9-6 and 2-3 in the league.

Salem State honored seniors Suzanne Stefanik (Dalton, Mass.) and Kayla McKim (Wakefield, Mass.) in a pre-game ceremony, who were playing in their final home game on Saturday.   

Jenna Wells (Revere, Mass.) – 3 goals, Megan Parthum (Marblehead, Mass.) – 2 goals, 1 assist, Madelynn Plourde (Bennington., N.H.) – 2 goals, 1 assist, Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.)  - 1 goal all contributed in Salem State's victory.

Alyssa DiScipio (Braintree, Mass.) led Mass Maritime with four goas and an assist. Nora McLaughlin (Quincy, Mass.) – 3 goals, 1 assist, Cassie Llewellyn (Fairfield, Conn.) – 2 goals, Lindsy Durgin (Rochester, Mass.) – 1 goal, 1 assist, Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass.) – 1 goal all scored for the Buccaneers.

Sujko and Plourde gave Salem State an early 2-0 lead, but DiScipio netted three straight scores to give Mass Maritime a 3-2 lead midway through the first. Sujko scored three of the next four goals with Durgin adding her first of the game for Mass Maritime as the Vikings entered the second period holding a 5-4 lead.

Salem State increased their lead to 8-5 in the third before back-to-back goals by DiScipio and Albertson made the halftime score 8-6 in favor of Salem State.

The Vikings scored four unanswered goals to start the third, including two by Sujko to build a 12-6 lead. Llewellyn added her first of the game for Mass Maritime at the 3:32 mark to draw Mass Marritime to within 12-7.

The Buccaneers outscored the Vikings 4-3 in the fourth period as McLaughlin added all three of her goals in the final period for Mass Maritime, the final goal coming with :11 seconds remaining to close the scoring, making the final 15-11.

Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) made seven saves in the victory for Salem State.  Aviva Beringhause (Providence, R.I.) stopped 13 shots for the Buccaneers in net. The Vikings held a 30-25 in shots for the game.
