Huskies Pull Away Early in Victory Over Vikings

GORHAM, Maine. – Southern Maine opened up a 6-0 lead and never looked back as four goals from Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, Maine) helped Southern Maine to a 13-1 victory over Salem State on Saturday in Gorham. The Huskies improve to 4-3 on the year while the Vikings go to 2-4. Taylor Sujko (Revere, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the game for the Vikings in the second quarter.

The Huskies wasted no time getting on the board as Evelyn Hinkley (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) scored just seventeen seconds apart from one another in the opening five minutes of play to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Southern Maine continued to dominate the first quarter as Kate Colvin (Winchester, Mass./Governor's Academy) and Darasz each got on the board.

Colvin and Shanks, who both had three-goal outings, each scored twice more in the second quarter and Darasz added her second of four goals. The second half of play was domnated by Southern Maine, which saw goals from Darasz (2), Emily Baker (Limerick, Maine), and Jillian Nichols (Gorham, Maine). The Vikings were held scoreless in the second half as they managed just six shots, while being outshot for the game 44-8.

Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine) earned the win, making one save before Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine) played the final quarter and was credited with three saves. Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) stopped 13 shots for Salem State.
