SALEM, Mass. -- #9 Elmira scored eight unanswered goals, including five in the first period, as the Soaring Eagles defeated Salem State, 8-0 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena. Erika Goleniak scored a pair of goals and added three assists as the Soaring Eagles improve to 6-2 and 5-1 in the NEHC. The Vikings slide to 1-7 and 0-6 in conference.
How it Happened:
- Bri Conger started the scoring surge with a shot off the post, beating goalie Delaney Cox blocker side for a 1-0 lead just 1:20 into the game.
- Later, Anna Lugge went top-shelf for a 2-0 lead at the 3:08 mark.
- Gaby Matson made it 3-0 twenty-five seconds later, scoring from the slot.
- Gabby Dougherty added a power play goal as Elmira scored four goals in the first 10 minutes of the game.
- Goleniak then converted a penalty shot near the end of the period as the Soaring Eagles built a 5-0 first period lead.
- Matson added her second of the game at 8:39 of the second to put the Soaring Eagles up 6-0.
- Erika Goleniak found Lugge all alone for her second goal of the contest just :21 seconds into the third for a 7-0 advantage.
- Erika Goleniak capped the scoring with Elmira's second power play goal of the game at 10:18 of the third, making the final 8-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Sara Sevcikova (1-0) stopped 11 shots in the win.
- Cox made 15 first period saves before giving way to Samantha Jaworski, who stopped 30 shots in two periods of work.
- Matson and Lugge finished with two goals and an assist each.
- Shots favored Elmira 52-11.
