PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Brenna Greene scored with just two seconds remaining in overtime as Salem State stunned Plymouth State 2-1 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) tilt at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings pick up their second conference victory (2-4) and improve to 3-8 on the season. The Panthers slip to 3-4 and 3-3 in conference.
With the game tied 1-1 in the final seconds of overtime, Lexi Warner corralled a loose puck along the boards and found Greene just outside the left face off circle. The senior wristed a shot past the stick of goalie Teagan Wilson, beating the clock and propelling Salem State to the improbable victory. Goalie Kaia Hollingsworth stopped 33-of-34 shots, giving the Vikings a chance for their last second heroics.
Jess Robert put the Vikings on the scoreboard in the first, notching her third goal of the year. However, Plymouth State answered with less than three minutes remaining in the period, as Katie Porrello put home a power play opportunity to tie the game at 1-all heading into the second period. A scoreless second period saw the Panthers outshoot the Vikings 17-10 as neither team could find the back of the net.
Salem State held the edge in the third, registering 16 shots on net to just five for the Panthers, but could not take advantage as Plymouth State forced an extra period of play.
Despite outshooting the Panthers, 46-34, the game appeared headed for a draw until Greene netted the game-winner.
Wilson made 44 saves for Plymouth State, who went 1-for-5 on the power play (,200). Salem State finished the game 0-for-8 (.000).
