SALEM, Mass. -- Williams Smith received goals from five different scorers and goalie Amanda Aalto (West Barnstable, Mass.) made all 15 saves as the Herons defeated Salem State 5-0 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) contest on Friday evening at Rockett Arena. William Smith snaps a three-game losing streak, picking up their first road win of the year in improving to 4-11-1 and 3-6-1 in conference. The Vikings playing for the first time in a month slide to 2-11 and 1-8 in the NEHC.
Alisa Canney (Burlington, Mass.) converted a turnover 2:11 into the opening period, putting William Smith on top 1-0 early. The Herons outshot Salem State 16-1 in the first period. William Smith scored three unanswered goals in the second to build a 4-0 advantage. Elizabeth MacMurray (Pottstown, Pa.) made it 2-0 in favor of William Smith, ripping a shot past goalie Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) at 6:21 of the second. Emma Faso (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and Taylor Ettore (Coatsville, Pa.) follwed with back-to-back goals as the Herons exited the second holding a 33-10 margin in shots on net.
Annabel Ziskin (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored from the slot, giving the Herons a 5-0 lead at the 5:33 mark of the third. Williams Smith added 14 more shots to end the game with a 47-15 advantage. Hollingsworth finished with 42 saves for the Vikings.
