Currier Nets Game-Winner in Salem State's 2-1 Victory Over Salve Regina

SALEM, Mass. -- Kylie Currier (Middleton, Mass.) broke a 1-1 tie with a go-ahead goal in the third period to lead the Salem State Vikings to a 2-1 win over the Salve Regina Seahawks at Richard H. Rockett arena on "Think Pink" night on Friday. The Seahawks fall to 4-11-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). The Vikings improve to 6-8-1 on the year and 4-5-1 in the conference.

Maddy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) opened the scoring for Salve Regina with a shot that hit the crossbar before going in, giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 18:23 of the first.

In the second period a three on one breakaway by the Vikings set up the tying goal as Rose Sullivan (Charlestown, Mass.) took a shot from the left side that was initially stopped by goalie Gretchen Howard (Winthrop, Mass.). However, the loose puck was corralled by Danielle Kelley (Charlestown, Mass.), who trailed in the middle, and the forward put home the puck into a nearly empty net.

In the third period, back-to-back penalties on Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) for tripping and Jacqueline Sindoris (Charlestown, Mass.) for interference gave the Seahawks a 5-on-3 power play. Salve Regina couldn't take advantage as the Vikings' swarming defense held firm.

Later in the third period, Currier took a slap shot that slipped past Howard into the bottom left of the net for the eventual game-winner with 4:11 left to play.

Salem State's Isabelle Woodward (Ottawa, Ontario) and Howard both totaled 18 shots saved.

The Vikings will faceoff at Salve Regina Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
