Westfield State Claims Both Ends of Doubleheader

SALEM, Mass. -- Westfield State took both games of a MASCAC doubleheader at Alumni Field on Monday afternoon. The Owls won game one, 13-1 in five innings and 4-3 in game two to improve to 20-6 and 5-1 in conference while the Vikings slip to 13-11 and 3-3 in the MASACAC.

Game 1

How It Happened

Katherine Canty allowed just one run on four hits with five strikeouts in improving to 9-1 on the season. Rachel Brewer-Karimi was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Kassidy LaTour had two hits in three at-bats with a triple, three runs, two RBI and two walks. 

Gracie Martineau (7-3) started and allowed 12 runs - three earned on 11 hits with a walk. Allison Frost was 2-for-3 with a run for Salem State.

  • Samantha Gaona-Sullivan's RBI single gave Salem State an early 1-0 lead. 
  • However, Westfield State responded with a nine-run second, all with two outs as Salem State committed three errors in the inning. Katelyn Baker connected for a two-run single before Abby Clark followed with a run-scoring single to center. The Owls used eight hits and sent 15 batters to the plate. A Sarah Hough double made it 5-1 and LaTour's two-run triple increased the lead to 8-1 before Sarah Bingham capped the scoring with an RBI base hit.
  • Leading 9-1 in the fourth, Slack added an RBI double before Brewer-Karimi delivered for an inside the park home run. 

Game 2

How It Happened

Joss Mettey threw a complete game for Westfield State in game two, giving up three unearned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Hough was 2-for-3 for the Owls.

Alanis Toledano took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks for Salem State. Dawn Eisnor went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

  • The game was scoreless until the sixth, when Westfield State scored four runs on a two-run triple by Bingham. Janna Jose and Christina Ciampa added RBI singles, making the score 4-0.  
  • Salem State responded with three in the bottom of the inning as Gaona-Sullivan plated the first run with an RBI single and Eisnor's two-run single to right, cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • Mettey worked a scoreless seventh to preserve the win. 

The Vikings go to Lasell this Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
