Vikings Take One of Two From Falcons

SALEM, Mass. -- Madison Solt pitched a complete game shutout in game one, leading Fitchburg State to a 1-0 victory over Salem State in game one of their scheduled MASCAC doubleheader on Friday at Alumni Field. Vikings starting pitcher Gracie Martineau returned the favor in game two, with a complete game shutout in a 7-0 Salem State win. The Vikings even their record at 8-8 and are 1-1 in conference. The Falcons go to 3-16 and 1-1.

Game 1

How It Happened

Solt allowed only four hits with four walks and five strikeouts on picking up her second win of the season (2-6). Carolyn Brodeur was 2-for-3 for Fitchburg State while Isabella Sousa was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Samantha Gaona-Sullivan had two hits for Salem State, including a double. Starter Alanis Toledano took the loss, going 6.0 innings while allowing a run on four hits with 10 strikeouts.

  • Pinch-hitter Sousa accounted for the only run with an RBI double to center that scored Carolyn Brodeur with the game's only run.
  • Paige Souza led of the fifth with a triple, but was stranded at third.
  • Salem State put runners on second and third in the sixth, but Solt worked out of the one-out jam.

Game 2

How It Happened

Martineau (5-2) scattered three hits to earn the win with a walk and strikeout. Gaona-Sullivan went 2-for-4 with a triple, and two runs scored with an RBI. Emily Henning was 1-for-1 with a two-run double.

Mackenzie Leveille (1-6) took the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing seven runs - one earned - on seven hits with three walks. Shaelyn Burns was 2-for-3 with a double.

  • Gaona-Sullivan's first inning triple plated Alaina Giuliano with the game's first run. An error and RBI double by Toledano made the score 3-0. 
  • Salem State scored four runs in the fifth on two hits and an error. Henning drove in a pair with a double before Souza and Hailey Ano worked bases loaded walks, making the score 7-0.
