CLERMONT, Fla. - Salem State concluded their spring Florida trip with a pair of games against Plattsburgh State and Bates on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals defeated Salem State 1-0 in the opener before Bates secures a 3-2 come-from-behind win in game two. The Vikings are now 5-7 overall.
Game 1
A pitchers duel dominated game one against Plattsburgh. Carly Gemmett went the distance with a one-hitter, striking out 12 while issuing two walks. Salem State starter Sula Roberge allowed just a run in five innings pitched, scattering six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Taylor McDermott collected the only hit for the Vikings, a seventh inning single up the middle to break up the no-hit bid.
How It Happened
- The Cardinals generated the only run they would need in the first as a single by Sara Isaacs and double from Bella Toleman accounted for the only run of the game.
- Gemmett did the rest, as an error in the second led to the only Salem State baserunner over the first four innings.
- Salem State put two runner on in the fifth via walks, but Gemmett ended the threat with a strikeout.
- Toledano threw an inning of scoreless relief for the Vikings.
Game 2
Alaina Giuliano went 3-for-4 in game two for Salem State with a run and RBI. Toledano allowed a run over five innings pitched, with two walks before being replaced by Gracie Martineau.
How It Happened
- An Isabel Bettencourt RBI double gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the first.
- Giuliano tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a base hit.
- An error produced a run for Salem State in the sixth as they took a 2-1 lead.
- However, Martineau ran into trouble in the seventh as Emma Yen doubled home Maya Lee with the tying run. Zariya Anderson then plated Yen with the go-ahead run with one-out.
- Giuliano singled in the seventh with two out, but Salem State could not generate another run, losing 3-2.
