Vikings Split With Kalamazoo, Ripon - Frost Sets Single Game Steals Record

CLERMONT, Fla. - Salem State faced Kalamazoo and Ripon in doubleheader action at Legends Way on Thursday. The Hornets defeated the Vikings 13-0 in the opener before the Vikings rebounded to win game two, 8-6 over Ripon. Junior Allison Frost set a new single game steals record against the Red Hawks, swiping seven bases as Salem State set a new team record for steals with 13, bettering the previous mark of 10, done twice, most recently against Centenary in 2017. The Vikings are now 5-5 on the season.
Game 1
Salem State collected just three hits against Kalamazoo. Tara Perryman started on the mound for Salem State, three innings, giving up nine runs - eight earned - with two walks and two strikeouts.
How It Happened
- The Hornets scored four in the first on four hits, highlighted by a two-run home un from Emma Newlove.
- An RBI double by Jordan Wesaw to left-centerfield made it 5-0 in the second.
- Kalamazoo put the game out of reach with an eight-run fourth, scoring eight runs on six hits. A three-run triple by Wesaw and an RBI double from Bella Caza made the score 9-0. Ella Neumann then followed with a three-run home run to left-centerfield before an error plated the final run of the inning.
Game 2
Frost was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run to go with her seven steals. Samantha Gaona-Sullivan had a hit, walk and three runs with three steals. Paige Souza finished 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Gracie Martineau won in relief of starter Alanis Toledano, who went three innings while allowing a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Martineau allowed five runs on 10 hits in four innings with a walk and strikeout.
How It Happened
- A bases loaded walk to Toldano gave Salem State a 1-0 lead in the first.
- Frost knocked in the second run with an RBI single in the second.
- Leading 3-1 in the fourth, Salem State added three runs on three hits in the inning to take a 6-1 lead. A double steal by Tara Perryman and Gaona-Sullivan added on run before Dawn Eisnor, who collected her 100th career hit, and Souza registered back-to-back base hits.
- Ripon closed the deficit with two runs in the fifth, but the Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning on run scoring base hits by Gaona-Sullivan and Taylor McDermott.
