Salem State Topped By Edgewood, Wis.-Whitewater

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Salem State took on Edgewood and Wis.-Whitewater in a pair of games at Legends Way on Tuesday. The Eagles defeated Salem State 5-3 in game one to improve to 4-9 on the season before the Warhawks, who are now 6-0, defeated the Vikings 8-2 in game two. Salem State is now 3-3 on the season. 

Game 1 

Alanis Toledano went 2-for-3 against Edgewood as the offense managed just eight hits off the Eagles' pitchers. Tara Perryman started for Salem State, pitching six innings while allowing five runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout. Sula Roberge pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

How It Happened

  • Edgewood struck first as sacrifice fly by Gracie Halfman and an RBI single by Natalie Fields gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the first.
  • A base hit by Kya Loffswold made the score 3-0 in the second.
  • Two more in the sixth on a base hit through the left side by Bean Dubree and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Allie Draper made it 5-0.
  • Salem State's offense awoke in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead. Tara Perryman's single with two on drove in the first two runs of the game for the Vikings. 
  • Salem State threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Alaina Giuliano brought in a run with a single to short, but Eagles pitcher Lauren Prigge came on to end the threat with the tying runs on second and third.  

Game 2

Tara Perryman went 3-for-3 in game two with an RBI while Samantha Gaona-Sullivan, who went 1-for-3, drove in the only other run for the Vikings. Toledano started the second game, going 3.1 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.

  • Keira Jarrett's RBI double put Wis.-Whitewater up 1-0 before Liv Ybarra's groundout made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
  • A three-run fourth by the Warhawks put them on top 5-0 after a two-run triple by Ybarra and an RBI single by Belle Lapacek.
  • Salem State added a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Gaona-Sullivan and Perryman to draw to within 5-2.
  • However, Wis.-Whitewater answered with three in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Kiarra Kostroski, making the final 8-2.
