Vikings Fall to Top Seeded Owls

WESTFIELD, Mass.- Salem State softball traveled to top seeded Westfield State University to take on the Owls in the quarterfinals of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament.  After seven innings the Owls took the 5-0 victory, handing the Vikings their first loss of the post-season.

How It Happen

  • The first two and a half inning was a pitchers' duel before the Owls opened the game in the home half of the third with two hits that brought home just as many runs to give them the 2-0 edge.
  • Alaina Guiliano (Malden, Mass.) answered in the fourth with the Vikings' first hit of the game but would be stranded on base two batters later to end the inning.
  • The Owls doubled their lead in the fifth frame after Sarah Bingham (Reno, Nev.) connected on a two-run shot over the center field fence to give her team the 4-0 advantage.
  • Westfield would use an error in the sixth to add another run to their tally before taking the 5-0 victory an inning later.

Noteworthy

  • Guiliano recorded two hits for the Vikings in the afternoon to notch her seventh multi-hit game of the season.
  • With her single in the sixth inning, Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) has now recorded a hit in four of her last five outings.

Salem State will be back in Westfield tomorrow, May 11 when they take on the loser from the second quarterfinal matchup between Framingham State University and Worcester State University. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m..
