Vikings Drop Two in Connecticut

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Salem State softball traveled to Connecticut this afternoon for a doubleheader against the Blue Jays of St. Joseph's College. The Blue Jays would take the first game 12-3 before holding the Vikings scoreless (7-0) in the second game to sweep the Vikings on the afternoon.

Game 1

  • The Vikings opened the game with the lead after a Sydney Rodriguez (Brighton, Colo.) double brought one around before Rodriguez herself would score later in the inning to give her team the early 2-0 tilt.
  • Rodirguez continued to be a bright spot for the Vikings as she opened the third with a single up the middle and would later find her way across home plate after a Dawn Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) double, bringing the score to 3-0 in her team's favor.
  • In the bottom half of that same inning, the Blue Jays exploded for nine hits to notch just as many runs to take the 9-3 lead over the Vikings.
  • The Blue Jays would hold the Vikings runless over the next two innings while adding three more to their total to take the first game by a score of 12-3.

Game 2

  • Rodriguez started the bats for the Vikings once again when she singled to right field but would be left on base after the Blue Jays retired the next two batters. In the bottom half of the opening inning St. Josephs' found their first lead when they notched two hits to bring in one run.
  • The Vikings looked to even the score in the third when back-to-back hits landed Rebecca Walker (Lynn, Mass.) and Rodriguez on base, but they would be left there to close the inning and keep the Vikings' runless. Meanwhile the Blue Jays added one more to their tally in the bottom half of the third to give them a three-run cushion.
  • The Blue Jays would string together six hits to take the 7-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth, which would prove to be enough as they blanked the Vikings to take the 7-0 victory.
