Vikings Defeat Panthers 1-0, Lose Game Two 14-6

SALEM, Mass. --  Brooke Westmoreland (Saugus, Mass.) threw a four-hit, complete game shutout in game one as Salem State edged Plymouth State 1-0 to take game one of their scheduled doubleheader. In game two, Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Panthers won 14-6 in six innings.

Westmoreland and Panthers' starter Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.) both took no-hitters into the fourth inning. Sydney Chiasson's (Hudson, Mass.) lead-off bunt single was the first hit for either side, but Miller worked out of the inning. Samantha Cushing (Amherst, N.H.) ripped a single for Plymouth State in the top of the fifth for their first base runner of the game. However, a double play ended any scoring threat.

Salem State broke through for the only run of the game in the sixth. Mikayla Porcaro (Amesbury, Mass.) hit a two-out double to left. Back-to-back errors plated Porcaro giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Cushing led off the top of the seventh with a double to left. A groundout put her on third with two out. However, Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.) popped up to second to end the game.

Westmoreland allowed just one walk in improving to 4-3 on the year. Miller went 6.0 innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts and a pair of runs in the loss.

In game two, Plymouth State (8-8) loaded the bases in the top of the third. Three consecutive hits by Hall, Niah Colby (Lunenburg, Vt.) and Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) and an  error and two-run single made it 3-0 in favor of the Panthers. Nia Neves (Medford, Mass.) replaced starter Gracie Hogan (Northbridge, Mass.), who lasted 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. With two out, Kayla Nester (Fairfax, Vt.) cleared the bases with a three-run double to center, making the score 6-0. Hall followed with another double and Plymouth State exited the inning with a 7-0 lead.

An RBI by Luciana Mastromatteo (Peabody, Mass.) cut the deficit to 7-1 in the fourth. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases again for Plymouth State. Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) singled home one run before Deyo made it 11-1 with a three run triple to right field. Cushing's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 12-1.

Neves went 1.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on four walks. Westmoreland closed out the game, pitching 1.2 innings with four runs allowed on six hits with a strikeout and walk.

Salem State (7-5) rallied in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on just two hits as Plymouth State's defense made three errors in the inning. Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.) added a run with a sacrifice fly. Three straight errors and a walk led to three more runs before a bases loaded walk to Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) brought the score to 12-6. Starter Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) went 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks before being removed with two outs in the fifth. Jillian Aziz (Plaistow, N.H.) worked out of the bases loaded jam by getting a groundout to end the inning.

Plymouth State ended the game in the sixth as the Panthers went up 14-6 following three doubles in the inning and two runs plated by Emerson.
