Salem State Celebrates D3 Week: Andrew Muttiah '22

Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and of student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community. During the week, every Division III school and conference office is encouraged to conduct a type of outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement.

Salem State continues its celebration of Division III Week with a featured spotlight on graduate-student and men's tennis player, Andrew Muttiah '22. Muttiah, a member of the Salem State men's tennis team, is among the all-time leader in wins and winning percentage at Salem State. He earned Little East Rookie and Player of the Year honors at first singles in 2018 after leading the Vikings to the conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. A two-time LEC Player of the Year and three-time, first team all-conference selection at first singles and doubles, he was named captain the past two seasons. A two-year SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) member and Special Olympics volunteer, he was elected to the SAAC Executive Board in 2020. Muttiah was inducted in Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society this year. A four-time All-MASCAC Academic and Dean's List selection, Muttiah carried a 3.79 grade point average in Business Administration.

Why SSU?

My best memories from SSU?

"My best memories from SSU are winning the Little East Conference championship my freshman year with six players on the team and earning Team MVP along with Player and Rookie of the Year accolades."

What message do you have for current seniors?

"Have fun during your time at SSU and make some great memories that you will take with you in the future. Work hard and finish off the semester strong."

Can you give a brief description of your major and why you chose it?

"During my undergraduate program my primary major was Hospitality Management. My second major was Aquatic Management and Recreation. I am currently in my final semester in the Master's in Business Administration program. I chose Hospitality management because I traveled a lot when I was younger and the hotel industry fascinated me. I decided to further my education by pursuing a Master's in Business Administration because I know that it will help me grow in the hospitality industry in the future."

Describe your career/ personal successes that you have achieved after leaving Salem State?

"I am currently the Housekeeping Manager at the Hampton Inn in Salem, Mass. I have been with the company for two years. I also coach tennis to kids and adults at North Shore Tennis club."
