Men's Tennis Opens Season with 9-0 Loss at Eastern Nazarene

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College Lions spoiled Salem State's 2021 men's tennis opener with a 9-0 victory over the Vikings at the ENC Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The reigning GNAC champions have now won two straight matches to open the season without allowing a single point. The Vikings go to 0-1 on the season.

Roni Bazile (Brockton, Mass.) / Peter Coletti  (Beverly, Mass.) battled Iago Alcover (Mallorca, Spain) / Baldo Karinja (Zadar, Croatia) at first doubles before losing 8-6 in a tightly contested match.

Andrew Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) / Cory Cherico (Winthrop, Mass.) lost 8-3 at second doubles to Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) / Carlos Sanchez (Malaga, Spain).

Carlos Gallardo (Tulua, Colombia) / Carlos Gomez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) completed the sweep with an 8-0 shutout of Johnson Ngandjui (Lynn, Mass.) / Kevin Merino-Rivas (Billerica, Mass.) at third doubles.

The Lions won all six singles matches in straight sets as Rodriguez defeated Muttiah 6-4, 6-1 at first singles while Alcover defeated Coletti 6-3, 6-3 at the second spot. Gomez knocked of Bazile 6-1, 6-3 at third singles.
