SALEM, Mass. -- Aaron O'Toole's (Quincy, Mass.) second half goal proved to be the difference as Salem State held off Mass Maritime 1-0 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings go to 4-3-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference (2-0). The Buccaneers slide to 1-6-1 and 0-2 in the MASCAC.
Mass Maritime keeper Quinn Kelly (West Roxbury, Mass.) made 10 first half saves, keeping the game scoreless over the first forty-five minutes, despite constant pressure by Salem State's forwards, who, produced 14 shots in the opening period.
Brendan Davis (Dracut, Mass. ) set up O'Toole in the 57th minute for the game's only score as Davis led O'Toole past the defense and the junior converted, slipping a shot past Kelly, beating the goalie on the left side.
The Viking's defense did the rest, as their counterattack kept possession for most of the second half in Mass Maritime's zone. The Buccaneers managed just five shots for the game compared to Salem State's 25. The Vikings also held Mass Maritime without a corner (10-0).
Matt Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.) picked up his third shutout of the year, making five stops in net in the victory. Kelly – 15 saves – had a good showing for the Buccaneers in the loss.
