Wentworth Edges Salem State 1-0

Wentworth Edges Salem State 1-0

SALEM, Mass. --  Jacob Dukeshire's (Canton, Mass.) goal in the 51st minute proved to be the difference as Wentworth held off Salem State 1-0 at Alumni Field on Wednesday evening. The Leopards improve to 1-1-1 while the Vikings suffer their first defeat (2-1) after a 2-0 start.

The two-teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. Salem State held a 6-3 advantage in shots on net, as most of the action was centered at midfield, with neither team gaining an offensive advantage.

Wentworth carried play early in the second half as both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm in a game that featured three yellow cards apiece and 13 fouls. The Leopards finally broke through when Augustin Edwin, Jr. (New Bedford, Mass.) feathered a pass to Dukeshire, who headed in the perfectly placed ball just outside the box, for the game's only score.

Christopher Jimenez (Doral, Fla.) nearly made it 2-0 in favor of Wentworth in the 68th minute, but his shot deflected below the crossbar, never crossing the goal line.

Salem State pushed the tempo over the final 20 minutes, pressuring the Leopards' defense, registering nine second half corners.

The Vikings had two prime opportunities to tie the game as Gabriel DaSilva (Woburn, Mass.) rifled a shot off the post with 16 minutes remaining followed by a clean look from Michael Flynn (Dedham, Mass.) five minutes later, which sailed wide from 10 yards away.

Wentworth tightened their defense over the final five minutes, preventing the Vikings from making one final push to tie the game.

Louis Quintero (Boston, Mass.) made six saves in net in the victory while Matt Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.) stopped eight shots for Salem State.
