Vikings Open Conference Play with 3-0 Win Over Bears

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State remained unbeaten on the new turf at Alumni Field as the Vikings opened Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) competition with a 3-0 shut out over Bridgewater State on Saturday afternoon. Salem State improves to 3-0 at home and 4-3, 1-0 overall. The Bears slip to 2-3, 0-1.

Fabricio Torres (Quincy, Mass.) put the Vikings on the board first when a great centering pass found the senior in front of the goal area. Torres then fired off a quick shot past keeper Lukas Ekmanis (Baxter, Tenn.) despite tight defense by the Bears.

Kendy Prince (Medford, Mass.) made it 2-0 when he easily beat Bridgewater State's keeper on a penalty shot in the 22nd minute.

Salem State dominated possession rifling off 13 first half shots and 27 for the game to just six for Bridgewater State.

Steven Lopez (Revere, Mass.) extended the lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute when he corralled a pass and converted from six yards out. The Bears could not find any rhythm on offense as Salem State's defense was up to the task, limiting Bridgewater State to just five shots on goal while helping the Vikings hold a 12-0 advantage in corners.

Matt Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.) improved to 3-1 on the year for Salem State, making just one save. Ekmanis (2-3) stopped 13 shots in the loss.
