Monks Defeat Vikings in Opener

SALEM, Mass. -- St. Joseph's defeated Salem State men's lacrosse 18-11 on opening night at Alumni Field. The Monks raced out to an 8-1 first quarter lead behind three goals from Tiger Hopkins in improving to 1-0 on the season. The Vikings are now 0-1.

Tiger Hopkins tallied five goals and a pair of assists while Calvin Heline added four goals to lead the attack for St. Joseph's.

Landon Rice and Grady Smith led the offense for Salem State with two goals and an assist each. Matthew LindstromJack Michaud and Joseph Turpin each scored a pair of goals for the Vikings.

How it Happened

  • Hopkins third score of the first quarter put the Monks on top 7-0 before Heline scored the eighth unanswered goal of the opening period at the 2:25 mark. 
  • Smith scored a pair of goals for Salem State in the second period, cutting the deficit to 9-5. However, the Monks countered with three straight goals before settling for a 13-7 halftime lead.  
  • Hopkins added his fourth goal of the night in the third before Wood made it 15-7 in favor of St. Joseph's. Michaud and Turpin added scores for Salem State, but Heline and Hopkins went back-to-back for the Monks, pushing the advantage to 17-9. 
  • Cameron Collins for Salem State and Cam Raymond for St. Joseph's each registered a goal in the fourth quarter, making the final 18-11.
  • Liam Greene (1-0) made four saves in the win. 
  • Ryan Cohen (0-1) took the loss, making 14 saves.
  • The Monks outshot the Vikings 62-20.   

The Vikings will host Albertus Magnus for their home opener on Saturday, March 1 @ noon.
