Vikings Lose to Elms 14-9

CHICOPEE, Mass.- Connor Tobin (Northampton, Mass.) scored five times and had an assist to give Elms College a 14-9 victory over Salem State on Wednesday night at Leary Field. The Blazers improved to 3-3 while the Vikings drop to 4-4.

How Did It Happen?

  • The Blazers were able to take advantage of a missed opportunity by Salem State. At the 9:51 mark, Tosh Marshall (Sylvan Lake, AB, Canada) was able to score from eight feet out to give Elms a 1-0 lead.
  • At the 3:00 minute mark of the first period. Tobin  made a remarkable pass over four Vikings' defenders, which led to a score. However, the Blazers didn't take long to increase their lead as 18 seconds later, Luciano Jordan Canino (Dalton, Mass.) scored, assisted by Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge, NY).
  • The Vikings were down 3-0 heading into the second period. Salem State was aggressive early on in the period, which led to the first goal of the game by Cameron Collins (Peabody, Mass.), who scored at the 9:37 mark.
  • Two minutes and two seconds later the Blazers managed to score the fourth goal of the game. However, the Vikings reduced the lead when Collins assisted Cameron Smith (Beverly, Mass.) at the 6:24 mark of the second period.
  • Late into the period Salem State made it a one goal game when Ryan Rice (Peabody, Mass.) assisted Collins to make it 5-4.
  • The Vikings managed to score four times during the second period as they trailed by one at the half.
  • During the opening five minutes of the third, both teams added a tally on the scoreboard. However, at the 8:47 mark, Collins scored his second goal of the game, resulting in a tie score of six.
  • Miltenberger scored his second goal of the game for Elms, adding one more to make it a three-goal game. Despite being down, the Vikings did not give up. At the 4:33 mark, Smith recorded a hat trick, putting the score at 9-7 in favor of the Blazers.
  • The Blazers scored twice in the closing moments, bringing their lead to four by a score of 11-7. 
  • Vittands scored again to make it 12-8 in the fourth.
  • Elms scored two more while Smith added one more with an assist by Vittands.

Behind The Numbers?

  • Salem State was undefeated on the road entering tonight (3-0).

  • Smith and Collins combined for six of the Vikings' nine goals. Jack Seward-Dailey led the Vikings with four ground balls.  

  • Tobin and Jordon Canino showed an outstanding performance as they combined to score nine goals for their team. Miltenberger and Marshall also contributed to their team's success by providing three assists apiece. Miltenberger, in particular, had a remarkable game as she led the team with 11 ground balls. On the defensive front, Devin Murphy was a standout player for the Blazers as he caused five turnovers throughout the game.

  • Ryan Cohen (Bedford, Mass.) had 14 saves while Casey Dmochowski (Rutland, Mass.) saved 18 shots. 

What's Next?

Salem State will be looking to bounce back this Saturday, March 30 when the Vikings will return to Alumni Field for Little East Conference (LEC) action against Eastern Connecticut State. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
