Regis Tops Salem State 12-7

SALEM, Mass.- Jack Jaynes (Reading, Mass.) emerged as the standout performer, scoring four times and providing two assists to give Regis College a resounding 12-7 victory over Salem State on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Pride remains unbeaten with a 3-0 record, while the Vikings dropped to 2-2.

Anthony Marsella (Johnston, R.I.) had three goals and an assist and Matt Cabasa (Weymouth, Mass.) and Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) also contributed significantly, leading the Pride with five ground balls each. Meanwhile, Jack Glowackz (Saugus, Mass.)  and Brayden Hutchinson (Belgrade, Maine.) recorded two caused turnovers each. For the Vikings, Timothy Eddings (Endicott, N.Y.) recorded a hat-trick with an assist while Cameron Collins (Peabody, Mass.) had seven ground balls and five caused turnovers.

The game started with Regis taking an early lead when Jaynes passed the ball to Cabasa, who slammed it home to give the Pride a 1-0 lead at the 10:57 mark. Despite the Pride having the lead, the Vikings were determined to get back in the game and managed to score three times in a span of a minute and ten seconds. Smith found Eddings to tie the game at one. Then Connor Vittands (Gloucester, Mass.) gave Salem State the lead with another goal before Collins extended the Vikings' lead with Eddings credited for the assist. However, seven seconds later, the Pride added one more when Marsella passed the ball to Jaynes, who scored to cut the Vikings' lead to one.  

During the second period, Nick Klein  (Buxton, Mass.) scored to tie the game at three at the 13:12 mark. A few minutes later, the Pride managed to take the lead when Jaynes netted his second goal of the game. Late into the period, Cook scored on an assist by Jaynes at the 1:28 mark to give the Pride a 6-3 lead.

Both teams had an equal number of groundballs at the half, with 15 each. However, Salem State had nine caused turnovers compared to Regis' six. On faceoffs, Regis had the advantage, winning eight out of the total 11. At the half, Devin Hammon (Chicopee, Mass.) of Regis College saved 14 out of 17 shots, while Ryan Cohen (Bedford, Mass.) saved six out of 12 shots.

At 11:02 in the third, Salem State was seeking to makeup ground when Vittands passed the ball to Smith, who made a successful shot. However, Deveau from the Pride seized an opportunity and sprinted towards the net, making a shot and score at the 8:05 mark. The Pride team was not done yet as Jaynes scored with an assist from Klein at 7:33, leaving the Vikings in a significant deficit of six points. Despite Collins's top shelf shot scoring for the Vikings, the team found themselves still down 10-5. Eddings managed to reduce the Vikings' deficit to 10-6 by sprinting towards the net and scoring at the 2:44 mark.

The competition remained intense in the fourth and at the 4:26-minute mark, Cook found Jaynes, who made a powerful shot into the net, extending the Pride team's lead to 11-6. However, Salem State managed to add one more goal when Eddings scored a hat-trick, putting the game at 11-7. The Pride team added one more goal late in the game to seal the deal.

The Pride had 23 turnovers throughout the game while the Vikings had only nine. Regis had won 18 faceoffs compared to Salem State's four. The Pride had 33 ground balls compared to Salem State's 30. Devin Hammon saved 23 of 30 shots while Cohen saved eight of 20 shots.

Salem State will be looking to bounce back this upcoming Saturday, March 16, when they will take on Husson at Alumni Field. Game time is at 12:00 pm.
