Vikings Fall to Owls in LEC Action

SALEM, Mass. – Tonight Salem State lacrosse welcomed the Owls of Keene State for Little East Conference (LEC) bout. Prior to the game, Doug and Sally Cioffi, the parents of Sam Cioffi, were welcomed back to Alumni Field as honorary captains for tonight's Opioid Awareness game in honor of Sam. After 60 minutes of action, the Owls were able to steal the 17-4 victory over the Vikings, to leave Salem still searching for their first LEC victory.

The Vikings were paced by Lake Fleming (Gloucester, Mass.) who had two goals while Erik Magner (Malden, Mass.) and Aristomenis Koumentakos (Westfield, Mass.) each chipped in with a goal in the effort. Defensively, Trevor Gilligan (Marblehead, Mass.) turned away 17 shots on the night.

How it Happened:

  • The Owls wasted no time getting on the board as they notched back-to-back goals in the opening three minutes to take the 2-0 tilt. At the 10:21 mark Koumentakos cut the lead in half when he snuck one past the Owl's keeper to make it a 2-1 game.
  • Despite Trevor Gilligan turning away the next three Owl shots, Keene would tack on two more goals to go into the second period with the 4-1 advantage.
  • The second period was all Keene State as they scored eight unanswered goals, spearheaded by Andrew Miller who scored two goals and dished out an assist, to go into the break with the sizeable 12-1 lead.
  • After Keene State opened the half with three goals of their own, Erik Magner found Fleming for the Vikings first goal of the half bringing the score to 15-2 with ten minutes to play in the third. Gilligan would turn away seven shots to keep the game at 15-2 entering the final period.
  • In the final fifteen minutes, the Vikings were able to add two more goals to their total while holding the Owls to their lowest scoring output of the game (2) before Keene State went on to take the eventual 17-4 victory over Salem State.
