CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime stormed past Salem State 28-1 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Mariners received outstanding efforts from Jacob Hintermaier (8g, 3a) and Alex Stevens (4g, 2a) to improve to 2-1 on the season. Salem State is now 1-5. Myles Despres broke the shutout with a goal at 5:36 of the fourth.
Hintermaier scored twice as part of a five-goal first quarter. The Mariners added 10 goals in the second quarter to take a commanding 15-0 lead at the half. Stevens and Sam Nichol combined for five scores in the period. Maine Maritime held a 37-9 advantage in shots at the break, while winning 15-of-17 draws from the face-off circle.
The Mariners added seven more unanswered goals in the third quarter, including three straight scores with a man down to end the period. Stewart Farnham tallied the 27th straight goal by the Mariners before Despres ended the Vikings scoring drought. Scott Fry closed the scoring with a goal at the 4:09 mark.
Garrett Ruszkowski stopped four shots in the win while Trevor Gilligan made 16 saves in the loss for Salem State. Jed Astbury had a game-high 17 groundballs.
