Terriers Post 18-9 Win Over Vikings

SALEM, Mass. -- William Heywood and Daniel Macwhinnie combined for 12 goals and four assists and Max Irons collected seven assists as Thomas blew past Salem State 18-9 on Wednesday at Alumni Field. The Terriers win their first game of the year (1-2) while the Vikings now stand at 1-4.  

Aidan Hollingsworth posted a career-high seven scores for the Vikings while Lake Fleming and Sean Roach Jr. each tallied a goal apiece. 

Hollingsworth opened the scoring for Salem State, but Thomas scored six unanswered goals, with three coming from Macwhinnie to take control early. The Vikings fought back, scoring three times all by Hollingsworth in the final 2:07 of the first to pull to within 6-4. The Terriers dominated the second period, outshooting Salem State 20-4 as Heywood notched three of the six goals scored by Thomas in the period, allowing the Terriers to build a 12-4 halftime lead.

Back-to-back scores by Hollingsworth to open the third drew the Vikings to within 12-6, but the Terriers answered with three goals of their own, including two by Macwhinnie to keep an eight-goal lead heading into the fourth.

Hollingsworth and Fleming each scored early in the fourth, but Heywood scored three straight times for Thomas, making the final 18-9.  

Daniel Guarino earned the win in net, playing the first half and recording five saves. Trevor Gilligan made 22 saves for Salem State.  

Jack Morrill had a game-high 16 groundballs for Thomas. Kyle Tammaro led the defensive effort for the Vikings with eight caused turnovers and four groundballs.
